Jil Molenaar is a researcher in the Sexual and Reproductive Health Group at ITM's Public Health Department. She recently completed her PhD, titled 'Between caring and counting: Maternal and newborn health data from Tanzanian maternity wards to global indicators'. Her PhD work spanned facility-level ethnography in Tanzania to qualitative interviews with international health measurement actors, exploring questions of power, standardisation, and local relevance in health data systems. In addition to her thematic expertise in the politics of measurement in global maternal and neonatal health, Jil is interested in how the shifting funding landscape affects our research, policy, and practice. She plans to pursue postdoctoral research on the influence of philanthropic funding in global reproductive and maternal health.

"Health surveillance systems are rarely neutral – they reflect choices about what counts, who counts, and whose needs the data ultimately serve. My paper examines Tanzania's routine health information system through this lens, tracing how standardised measurement provides a valuable but partial picture of the quality of maternal and neonatal health services."
