Dr Gani Muhammad Idris is a medical doctor and Principal Medical Officer at the National Health Insurance Authority, Nigeria. His work focuses on health financing, strategic purchasing, quality of care, and health systems strengthening to advance Universal Health Coverage. He provides technical support for the development and implementation of policies and guidelines that improve equitable access to quality healthcare, particularly through strategic purchasing, primary healthcare, and financial protection initiatives.

Through his professional experience in Nigeria's national health insurance system and training in health systems, health policy, and financing, Gani has developed expertise in health financing reforms, quality of care, and evidence-informed policymaking. He has participated in international programmes on health financing and health systems strengthening, including the Innovations in Health Financing and Social Protection programme at the Institute of Tropical Medicine, Antwerp.

His research interests include the implementation of health financing reforms, strategic purchasing, domestic resource mobilisation, priority setting, health system resilience, and evidence-informed policymaking. He is particularly interested in understanding how policy changes can strengthen strategic purchasing, expand financial protection, and accelerate progress towards Universal Health Coverage in low- and middle-income countries.
