Prof Afework Kassu Gizaw has been serving as Director General of the Armauer Hansen Research Institute (AHRI) in Ethiopia since January 2022, following a distinguished career in government, academia, and research leadership. Prior to this role, he held key ministerial positions, including State Minister of Science and Higher Education (2018–2021), where he oversaw science, research, and community service initiatives, and State Minister of Foreign Affairs (2018), leading political diplomacy across multiple global regions. He also served as State Minister of Science and Technology (2015–2018) and as Director General for Higher Education Research and Academic Affairs at the Ministry of Education in 2015. His academic career spans two decades at the University of Gondar (1994–2014), where he held several leadership roles, including Vice President for Research and Community Services, before joining Addis Ababa University as a Professor of Medical Microbiology and Immunology. Trained as a biologist and applied microbiologist, he earned his BSc and MSc from Addis Ababa University and a PhD in Biomedical Sciences from the University of Tokushima, Japan, and completed postdoctoral research at the University of Colorado Denver. His research focuses on infectious diseases such as HIV/AIDS, tuberculosis, and parasitic infections, reflected in over 140 peer-reviewed publications, and he actively contributes as a reviewer and member of numerous professional associations in public health, microbiology, and related fields.
